There are moments when life becomes too much to handle, and my emotions feel so jumbled that I struggle to express them. In those times, I often find myself longing for a way to reconnect with who I truly am. Have you ever wondered how to discover a sense of calm that resonates not only in your mind but also deep within your body? It's a journey worth exploring. That's where my journey with somatic therapy began, revealing a gentle yet profound path to healing.

Embarking on this journey has truly been an invitation for me to tune into my body’s wisdom. I’ve found it essential to let go of the tension I’ve been holding onto, and in doing so, I’ve started to rediscover a profound sense of peace and balance within myself. I'm excited to dive into this transformative approach with you. Together, we'll uncover how it works, why it truly matters, and how you can start experiencing its benefits in your life.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-centred approach to mental health that emphasises the deep connection between the mind and body. Instead of just talking about past events, it focuses on how trauma, stress and emotional pain are physically stored in your nervous system and tissues. It highlights the importance of body sensations and experiences for healing.

While traditional methods often focus on thoughts and emotions, I’ve found that this therapy really emphasises the importance of physical sensations and bodily experiences. I've come to realise that stress and emotional pain can often become trapped within us, showing up as tension, discomfort, or even illness.

How Does It Work?

The process often involves:

  • Body awareness exercises: Learning to notice subtle sensations like tightness, warmth, or tingling.

  • Breathing techniques: Using breath to regulate the nervous system and ease tension.

  • Movement and touch: Guided movements or gentle touch to help release physical and emotional blocks.

  • Mindfulness and grounding: Staying present with your body’s signals without judgment.

This approach is especially helpful for those who find it difficult to express their feelings verbally or who have experienced trauma that feels “stuck” inside.

The Benefits of Somatic Therapy

You might wonder, what makes somatic healing therapy so powerful? The answer lies in its ability to address the whole person - body, mind, and heart. Here are some of the key benefits you can expect:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: By calming the nervous system, you can experience a deep sense of relaxation.

  • Improved emotional regulation: Becoming aware of bodily sensations helps you manage overwhelming emotions more effectively.

  • Healing from trauma: Somatic healing therapy offers a safe way to process trauma without retraumatisation.

  • Enhanced self-awareness: You develop a stronger connection to your body and its needs.

  • Better sleep and energy levels: Releasing tension can improve your overall wellbeing.

  • Support for addiction recovery: It helps address underlying emotional pain that often fuels addictive behaviours.

For example, someone struggling with anxiety might notice a tightness in their chest or shallow breathing. Through somatic healing therapy, they learn to breathe deeply and release that tension, which can lessen the intensity of their anxiety over time.

This therapy is not just about fixing problems but about nurturing your natural ability to heal and thrive.

Can I Do Somatic Therapy on Myself?

Absolutely, you can start exploring somatic healing therapy on your own. While working with a trained therapist can provide guidance and support, there are simple practices you can try at home to connect with your body and ease stress.

Here are some gentle ways to begin:

  1. Body Scan Meditation

Lie down or sit comfortably. Slowly bring your attention to different parts of your body, noticing any sensations without trying to change them. This practice helps you become more aware of where you might be holding tension.

  2. Breath Awareness

Take a few deep breaths, feeling the air fill your lungs and then slowly release it. Notice how your body responds. You can try breathing in for a count of four, holding for four, and breathing out for four.

  3. Gentle Movement

Stretch or sway gently, paying attention to how your body feels. This can be as simple as rolling your shoulders or stretching your arms overhead.

  4. Grounding Exercises

Stand or sit with your feet firmly on the ground. Feel the connection between your body and the earth. This can help you feel more centred and present.

Remember, the goal is not to force anything but to listen and respond kindly to your body’s messages. If you find certain sensations uncomfortable or overwhelming, it’s okay to pause and seek professional support.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or the lingering effects of trauma? Sometimes, our bodies hold onto tension in ways that words alone can’t reach. That’s where TRE therapy comes in - a gentle, empowering practice designed to help you release deep-seated stress and reconnect with your inner calm. If you’re curious about how this works and where you can experience it, let me take you through the world of TRE therapy workshops in the UK.

What Is TRE Therapy and How Can It Help You?

TRE stands for Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises. It’s a simple yet powerful set of movements that encourage your body to shake off stress naturally. Think of it as your body’s own way of resetting after a tough day or a difficult experience. When you attend a TRE therapy workshop, you learn how to activate this natural tremoring response safely and effectively.

Why does this matter? Because trauma and stress don’t just live in our minds - they settle in our muscles and nervous system. TRE helps release that tension, promoting relaxation and emotional balance. You might notice improvements in sleep, mood, and even physical pain. It’s a holistic approach that honours the connection between body, mind, and heart.

Exploring TRE Therapy Benefits in Depth

The benefits of TRE therapy are as varied as the people who try it. Here are some of the most common positive changes you might experience:

  • Reduced anxiety and stress: The tremors help calm your nervous system, making it easier to face daily challenges.

  • Improved sleep quality: Many people find they sleep more deeply after practising TRE.

  • Relief from chronic pain: By releasing muscle tension, TRE can ease aches and discomfort.

  • Emotional resilience: You may feel more grounded and able to manage difficult emotions.

  • Enhanced self-awareness: TRE encourages a gentle connection with your body’s signals.

Imagine waking up feeling lighter, more present, and less burdened by the weight of past experiences. That’s the kind of transformation TRE therapy workshops aim to support.

What to Expect at a TRE Therapy Introductory Workshop

If you’re considering joining a TRE therapy workshop, you might wonder what the experience will be like. You’ll start with gentle stretches and movements designed to activate your body’s natural tremors.

The environment is calm and supportive, encouraging you to listen to your body without pressure or judgement. You don’t need any special fitness level or experience - just a willingness to explore and be present.

If you’re in Shropshire or prefer to join from home, there are options available both in-person and online. This flexibility means you can find a workshop that fits your lifestyle and comfort level.

How to Prepare for Your First TRE Therapy Workshop

Feeling a bit nervous about trying something new? That’s completely normal. Here are some simple tips to help you get ready:

  1. Wear comfortable clothing: Loose, stretchy clothes allow you to move freely.

  2. Stay hydrated: Drink water before and after the session to support your body.

  3. Arrive with an open mind: TRE is about gentle exploration, not performance.

  4. Listen to your body: You can pause or stop any movement if it feels uncomfortable.

  5. Bring a journal: Writing down your thoughts and feelings after the workshop can be helpful.

Remember, TRE therapy is about you and your unique journey. There’s no right or wrong way to experience it.

Finding the Right TRE Therapy Workshop for You

With so many options out there, how do you choose the best workshop? Here are some pointers:

  • Check credentials: Look for certified TRE practitioners with good reviews.

  • Consider the format: Do you prefer in-person sessions in Shropshire or online workshops you can join from anywhere?

  • Look for a supportive atmosphere: The right facilitator will create a safe, welcoming space.

  • Read about the workshop structure: Some focus more on education, others on practice and sharing.

The Importance of Commitment

Welcome to your November Monthly Insight. This month, we focus on commitment—a powerful word that touches every part of us: our mind, body, and energy. Commitment shapes our habits, relationships, and personal growth. Let's explore simple ways to connect with commitment across yourself.

In today's fast-moving world, sticking to commitments often gets overshadowed by the temptation of quick fixes and trendy fads. But commitment is more than just making promises; it's a key part of what keeps us grounded and happy. Whether it's in our personal relationships, careers, or self-improvement journeys, being committed gives us stability and purpose. It pushes us to put in the time and effort to reach our goals, which leads to more satisfaction and resilience. By understanding how commitment plays a role in our lives, we can build stronger connections, chase our dreams, and boost our mental and emotional health. In this blog, we'll dive into how commitment affects different areas of wellbeing and share tips on how to strengthen this important trait. In this blog post I share three easy ways to make a daily commitment part of your routine.

Mind

Commitment begins in the mind with clarity. Take a moment now to reflect: What is one small thing you want to commit to this month? It might be a daily breath pause, gentle movement, or showing kindness to yourself. Write this down to make your commitment clear. Each day, remind yourself gently of this intention, seeing it as a promise to your well-being.

Exercise: Every morning I invite you to connect with this affirmation,

“Today I commit to [your intention], and I do my best to accomplish my goal"

Pause for a moment and take a deep breath, letting these words sink into your mind and body. Repeat this process several times until it feels integrated.

Body

Our bodies remember commitment through consistent actions. This month, honour your body with intentional movement that feels good. Whether it’s a short walk, stretching, TRE® exercises, conscious breathing, or simply mindful sitting, these moments build physical commitment to self-care.

Exercise: Select a moment each day to mindfully move your body. Remove your shoes and focus solely on the sensation of your feet on the ground. Feel the stretch in your muscles and the flow of your breath as you move your feet. Observe how your body reacts to this simple yet impactful act of dedication, and be aware of how your feet consistently guide you to the next step in shaping your reality.

Energy

Commitment influences our energy flow. When we commit, our energy aligns with purpose, fueling motivation and calm. Practice grounding your energy by bringing awareness to the present moment and rooting yourself in your body’s sensations.

Exercise: Grounding visualisation.

Bring your awareness to your feet. With your next breath, begin to imagine soft, gentle roots extending from the soles of your feet. See these roots reaching down through the floor beneath you, growing longer and stronger with every breath.

Visualize the roots moving through soil and stone, reaching deep into the earth. Each breath grounds you more firmly, just like a steady, grounded tree.

Feel the support of the earth below you—solid, calm, and nurturing. Imagine the nourishing energy of the earth rising up through your roots, filling your legs and entire body with strength and calm.

As you exhale, let any stress or worries flow out through your roots, carried away into the earth. Breathe in stability and vitality. Breathe out tension and heaviness.

Allow your body and mind to rest a moment in this grounded, rooted state, supported by the earth’s energy. Notice the steadiness and reassurance spreading through you.

When you’re ready, slowly bring your attention back to your body. Gently wiggle your fingers and toes, feeling renewed and firmly grounded.

Softly open your eyes, carrying this rooted calm into your day.
